Holidays should be a time of fellowship, not loneliness. That was the driving force behind why Carla Brown organized the first Thanksgiving dinner in 1995, and the reason 250 volunteers come together today. What started with a few friends organizing the first dinner for 50 guests has expanded into an event on both Thanksgiving and Christmas with over 800 guests! These free dinners are made possible through the generous contributions of area businesses and individuals, the loyal committee and dedicated volunteers.

During the Chamber Connections, long-time volunteer, James Melland shared details about the McPherson Community Dinners history, upcoming dinner location, what delicious items to expect on the menu, the extensive volunteer opportunities, contact information and a special thank you to Verla Thomason for all she does. If you missed it, here is the scoop: Thanksgiving Dinner will be served from 11:30-1:30 at the McPherson High School activity center (enter through west doors off North High Drive). Volunteers are needed even the day before the holiday and should call 620-755-8108 for more details and times. To donate pies (fruit pies can be made at home, but pumpkin pies must be purchased from a business/catering kitchen) please call 620-241-5686. You can also find out more on their Facebook page: McPherson Community Dinners or email mcphersoncommunitydinners@gmail.com

The dinners are an inviting community event where everyone comes together to share the holiday spirit. It’s not about finances, not about being a resident, it’s about having a place to share a delicious meal with a community that cares. Everyone is welcome.  To create a festive atmosphere, the tables are decorated by volunteers and local 6th graders put their unique designs on 500 take-home goodie bags. No reservations are needed, but if you know of someone who is unable to leave their home, delivery is available by calling 620-241-0454. A big thank you to everyone who has made this McPherson tradition (22nd annual) and to all those who continue to be a part of this warm and welcoming experience.
