Honoring Veterans on November 11, 2014

Dan Hervey, Chairman of the McPherson Area Veterans Committee, released details for Veterans Day activities to be held in McPherson on Tuesday, November 11, 2014. The day will begin with a free breakfast sponsored by Gentiva Hospice for veterans and guest at the Legion Hall from 8:00 am until 10:00 am. The McPherson Chamber of Commerce will help serve. Reservations should be called in to 620-245-0891. Weather permitting, a parade will begin at 10:30 AM in front of the American Legion and proceed down Main to Marlin to Walnut to Woodside to Mulberry and end at the Park Dept. Bldg. (old National Guard Armory). A ceremony inside the old drill hall will follow the parade at 11:00 am. KNGL/KBBE radio will broadcast the ceremony live for those unable to attend.

The keynote speaker will be Col. Hal Hoxie, USAF, Retired. Col. Hoxie was a combat pilot during Desert Storm. Currently, he is the president of Central Christian College.

The invocation will be given by Pastor Tim Leaf, Trinity Lutheran Church. Other activities include the National Anthem by McPherson High School Band, Amazing Grace by Lonny Liljegren, God Bless the USA by Nick Gosnell, Rifle Salute by VFW Post #2715, and Taps played by Mark Casebeer.

Immediately following the ceremony everyone is invited to stay for a free chili luncheon sponsored by the Investment Center, Wendy’s, and Trinity Lutheran Church. At 7:00 pm there will be a potluck dinner at the VFW Post for veterans and family. Baked steak will be provided and everyone should bring a covered dish.

All McPherson area churches are asked to recognize their veterans in attendance and those currently on active duty during their worship service on Sunday, November 9, 2014.
