Member Spotlight – American Legion Post No. 24

The McPherson Chamber of Commerce gathered at American Legion Post 24, 401 N. Main, on November 6th for the weekly Chamber Connection. More than 50 attendees filled the historic Main Street “anchor” to hear how the Legion continues to serve as a cornerstone of community, service, and patriotism. Beyond being a veterans’ organization, Post 24 is a hub of activity, supporting youth programs, scholarships, veteran outreach, and events that strengthen local connections.

Post 24 Commander Dan Hervey helped clarify one of the most common questions: what’s the difference between the American Legion and the VFW? If you served in a war zone, you’re eligible for the VFW and the American Legion, he explained. But if you served during wartime—whether or not you were in combat—you’re eligible for the Legion. A few years ago, the Legion expanded its charter so that anyone who has served since Pearl Harbor in 1941 can join, which has opened the doors to many more veterans and their families.

Membership remains at the heart of the Legion’s mission, though it’s a challenge nationwide. “At one time, 10% of the population were veterans,” Hervey shared. “Now it’s about 1%.” To keep the spirit of service alive, Post 24 offers a variety of membership options—not just for veterans but also for their families and supporters through the Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion, Legion Riders, and Social Memberships. Members enjoy a vibrant social scene, from Thursday Happy Hour to trivia nights, family events, and the annual Toys for Kids Auction, which help brighten the holidays for local families.

The recently renovated foyer, funded by the family of Victor Arnold Hedlund, a World War II veteran and past Post 24 Commander, reflects the pride and commitment that keep the Legion thriving. With its large meeting and dining hall, stage, and lounge, Post 24 offers a warm and versatile space for reunions, celebrations, and community gatherings. Whether you’re a veteran, a family member, or simply someone who values service and camaraderie, Post 24 welcomes you. Learn more online at alpost24.com. Ready to join?
