Member Spotlight- All Schools Day

The 113th All Schools Day “Star Spangled Celebration” is set to bring a full week of excitement to McPherson, continuing a tradition that dates back to 1914. What began as a celebration honoring eighth-grade graduates has grown into a countywide event packed with parades, performances, and community gatherings.

Organizers emphasize that the celebration wouldn’t be possible without local support. “It takes a LOT of people to organize and put together all of the All Schools Day happenings throughout the week,” said co-chair Lindsay Helms, who expressed appreciation for the many volunteers who help make the festivities possible.

Helms, serving her second year as co-chair alongside Kyler Jost, noted that the most common questions the committee receives are surprisingly simple. “The top question asked is, ‘Where can I buy a button?’” she said, adding that the next most frequent question is, “Why buy a button?” The answer, she explained, is at the heart of the event’s success: “That’s our main support. That’s how we fund All Schools Day, and it gets you into lots of events for free. It also shows community spirit. It’s so fun to be able to see everyone wearing a button.” This year’s enthusiasm extends to the Button Design Contest, which drew a record 132 entries, now on display at the McPherson Museum.

Beyond the buttons, the celebration offers a packed schedule of activities for all ages. Highlights include the May Fete performance

s showcasing local students, a bustling carnival at Wickersham Park, and community favorites like the parade, Plaza Jam, and Playtime in the Park. Unique experiences such as youth airplane rides at the McPherson Airport and the ice cream social at the McPherson Museum add to the family-friendly appeal. The week culminates with All Schools Day After Dark at Wall Park, featuring live music, food trucks, and fireworks. As Helms and organizers encourage residents and visitors alike to explore the full lineup and “have fun celebrating all week long” at this long-standing community tradition.
