Member Spotlight- Citizen Journal
Citizen Journal is a fast-growing digital news resource designed to keep readers informed without overwhelming them. Each issue features
five paragraph-length stories that can be read in just five minutes, making it easy to stay up to date. The outlet delivers a five-item national news summary every morning, a five-item Kansas news summary each evening, and consistent local coverage from communities such as Hutchinson, Salina, McPherson, and Lindsborg. With its focus on clarity, brevity, and accessibility, Citizen Journal has become a reliable source for readers who want meaningful news in a short amount of time.

Molli Fawl, a member of the Citizen Journal staff, explained the organization’s reach and mission. “So, I do the McPherson brief, which we have, like obits in there, jail logs, sports, other news,” she said, noting that the company currently operates in 34 cities across five states, with Kansas as its primary focus. Fawl emphasized the goal behind the platform, stating, “Our mission is uniting communities by restoring a common information space.” She added that Citizen Journal remains free to readers thanks to the support of local businesses, which help fund coverage of local news and sports.
Sports coverage is another key component of Citizen Journal, led by Treg Fawl, who covers local athletics from youth leagues to high school sports. “Right now, I usually cover mainly McPherson sports – high school, middle school, youth,” he said, adding that community members can easily submit sports stories through the app. Behind the scenes, software engineer Max Vidavsky oversees the technology that powers the platform and shared that Citizen Journal is working on new advertising options and an upcoming community calendar. The company was founded in 2025 by Greg Loving, a McPherson native, who saw a need for stronger local news. “It just seemed like everything is nationalized, and there was very little local news,” Loving said. Today, Citizen Journal reaches tens of thousands of readers each month through its app and website, proving that accessible, community-centered journalism still has a strong place in today’s media landscape.
